Leisure and Entertainment

The leisure and entertainment industry in Bangladesh has a rich history dating back to the Mughal era, and has evolved significantly over time, including the introduction of Western-style entertainment and leisure activities during British colonial rule. After gaining independence in 1971, various entertainment venues such as cinema halls, music theaters, and amusement parks were established. Bangladesh’s leisure and entertainment industry is thriving, offering diverse activities including cinema, music concerts, amusement parks like Fantasy Kingdom, and live music venues like Dhaka Rock Cafe and Music Museum for local musicians.

The leisure and entertainment industry in Bangladesh generates significant annual revenue. The tourism industry, a major contributor, generated around BDT 125 billion (approximately USD 1.5 billion) in 2020. It is expected to grow at a rate of 10% annually due to increasing demand for entertainment and leisure activities. However, the industry also incurs substantial costs, with the average annual operating cost for an amusement park being around BDT 50 million (approximately USD 600,000).

The leisure and entertainment industry in Bangladesh has seen significant growth in recent years, with revenue reaching Tk 2.5 billion in 2020, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. The industry’s main activities include theme parks, resorts, and restaurants, catering to a growing middle class seeking leisure and entertainment options. Despite challenges such as limited infrastructure and competition from informal sectors, the industry is expected to continue growing, supported by the government’s plans to develop tourism infrastructure and promote the country as a tourist destination.
